Probably an early work, preceding the Artist’s participation in the difficult Whitney exhibition of works by Black artists which seemed to galvanize Sockwell’s interest in notions of Black art, marked primarily by his Mirror Compositions. This work, an abstract expressionist and color field work does not appear to have the political or cultural commentary seen in some of his later works–and in some ways is all the more powerful for it, likely being a relatively early expression of abstraction in Sockwell’s work.
