Joseph Solman’s portrait of a woman that appears to be strongly Fauvist-inspired, with the saturated colors bounded in shapes that simplify the elements of the image that figured prominently in that movement. Solman was a leader of the Modernist movement, was deeply influenced by MoMA’s 1929 inaugural show which featured Expressionists Seurat, Gauguin, Van Gogh, and Cézanne, and by Solman’s first solo show in 1934 their influence—along with the influence of Georges Rouault—was clear. Two of the most common quotes about Solman’s work could have been referring to this painting: One critic referred to, “the mystery that lurks in deserted streets in the late twilight” and another noted that Solman’s color had “an astonishingly rich quality that burns outward beneath the surface”. Solman was not a Washingtonian but he had significant connections to the city.
