Woody Gwyn is widely considered to be one of America’s leading contemporary landscape painters and printmakers. His subjects are primarily the deserts, mesas, and long highways of the American West, along with sites seen during his travels. His compositions are sometimes as long as 16 feet and typically feature expanses of space seen from dramatic angles. “Subject matter is just an excuse to express a quality of light and space,” he has said. “As a realist painter, I hope I transcend the subject.”
